Patient Choice
06 December 2017

NHS England is currently asking practitioners to remind patients that they have the legal right to choose where they have their NHS treatment. The NHS is offering more and more options to enable patients to make choices that best suit their particular circumstances, giving them greater control of their care – and hopefully better results.

You can view what choices are currently available to NHS patients in the NHS Choice Framework on GOV.UK. Here you'll also find information about when patients are unable to choose – for example, if they need emergency care or they are a member of the armed forces. Make sure you know which options apply to different patients.

Patients can also choose a clinical team led by a consultant or named healthcare professional, as long as that team provides the treatment they require. Find out more about choosing a hospital or consultant and choosing a mental health service.
